Bug Be Gone Botanical Bug Mist

A plant-powered shield for porch nights and garden mornings

There's something about a warm evening on the porch — the fireflies coming out, the herb garden settling in for the night — that I want to soak up without a cloud of mosquitoes ruining the moment. So I built this mist from the plants that have always been our allies against biting bugs, with catnip leading the way. Yes — that catnip. The same plant that makes our feline friends lose their minds also happens to be one of the strongest botanical mosquito deterrents in the herbalist's kit. Paired with bright citrus oils and a clean witch hazel base, this mist goes on light, dries fast, and lets you enjoy the season the way it was meant to be enjoyed.

What's Inside

Ingredient

What It Brings

Catnip

The quiet star of this blend — nepetalactone is one of the most respected plant compounds in the traditional bug-deterrent kit.

Lemon Eucalyptus

Bright and citrusy — a standout plant ally for keeping biting bugs at bay.

Citronella

The classic garden-party oil; warm, grassy, and unmistakable.

Lavender

Softens the blend with its sweet, calming floral note.

Peppermint

A cool, lively top note that bugs tend to steer clear of.

Lemongrass

Bright and herbaceous; rounds out the citrus side of the blend.

Witch Hazel

A traditional plant base that carries the oils gently across your skin.

Why a Touch of Fractionated Coconut Oil

A small measure of FCO helps the botanical oils linger on the skin a little longer than witch hazel alone, so the mist keeps doing its quiet work while you enjoy the evening. It's light, non-greasy, and disappears into the skin.

How to Use

Shake well — the plant oils settle between uses, so give the bottle a good shake before every spray.

Mist freely — spray onto exposed skin and clothing before heading outdoors, keeping away from the eyes.

Refresh often — reapply every hour or so, especially after sweating, swimming, or toweling off.

Ankles and socks too — a quick spray on shoes and pant legs goes a long way in the garden.

• For external use only. Patch-test on a small area of skin before regular use.

• Keep away from eyes, mouth, and broken skin.

• Not recommended for children under 3.

• Pregnant and nursing mamas — please check with your care provider first.

  • Catnip – A 2001 study found that Catnip essential oil repelled mosquitoes 10 times more effectively than DEET!
  • Citronella -This 2011 study determined that citronella is as effective as DEET; however, it does lose effectiveness quickly as it “evaporates.”
  • Lemongrass – This 2013 study found that lemongrass was “an effective repellent against mosquitoes” and house flies.
